It’s the proudest moment of my life.”

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Gautam Gambhir pulled off an impressive run chase to beat Sri Lanka by six wickets in the World Cup final in Mumbai.

The fourth-wicket pair ensured India did not panic in front of a capacity home crowd after the early loss of big guns Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar in pursuit of 274 for six.

The favourites prevailed with 10 balls to spare in today's showpiece between sub-Continental neighbours, both seeking their second World Cup, despite a wonderful 103 not out from Sri Lanka's Mahela Jayawardene.

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni timed entire World Cup campaign to perfection.

Play without fear!” recommends Sachin Tendulkar. His captain MS Dhoni is the definition of that. Unfazed by a highest score in the tournament of just 34, he promoted himself to No 5 and strode to the crease with the match in the balance at 114-3. With total conviction and complete self-assurance he clipped and chipped, occasionally carved, and ultimately clubbed, his side to handsome victory with a massive six over long on to finish 91 not out. The prolific Tendulkar may be India's national treasure but Dhoni is their modern icon

Not without controversy or melodrama, the Indian dream came true. In the euphoric atmosphere of the Wankhede Stadium India won the 10th World Cup final by four wickets with 10 balls to spare.

Ultimately, in the battle of the captains Mahendra Dhoni, after a dodgy start to the day, prevailed in a pulsating climax to the tournament. There were suggestions that Dhoni had been hoodwinked at the toss by Kumar Sangakkara, but it was the India captain who had the last laugh when the fireworks exploded into the night sky of Mumbai

It may be that Sri Lanka tried to be too clever by half. They shuffled their side dramatically, making four changes from the semi-final, only one of them forced after Angelo Mathews's injury. Ajantha Mendis, the unorthodox spinner, was omitted on the basis that the Indians play him rather well. In this tournament Mendis has been bowling rather well, but that was not deemed to be sufficiently relevant.

India are champions of the world. To the unstinting adulation and unbridled joy of millions upon millions of countrymen, the side led – and led from the front – by Mahendra Singh Dhoni defeated Sri Lanka in an enthralling final by six wickets to take the title for the first time in 28 years.

Only 33,000 were present to witness what has long been predicted to be India's destiny but it felt as if the population of Mumbai and of many cities beyond was crammed into the Wankhede Stadium. Dhoni, who had had a quiet tournament with the bat, entered the arena with India in a tricky position on 115 for 3, needing 275 to win.

But he shared a composed, studiously determined fourth-wicket stand of 109 from 118 balls with Gautam Gambhir which tilted the match irrevocably India's way. Gambhir was out three short of his century, trying to slog his way to three figures, but his captain saw it through.

India beat Sri Lanka by six wickets in a pulsating final to deliver World Cup glory to their cricket-mad population for the first time since 1983.

Sri Lanka smashed 91 from their last 10 overs to post 274-6 in Mumbai, with Mahela Jayawardene making a superb 103.

India lost Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar early on but Gautam Gambhir and Mahendra Dhoni rebuilt the innings.

Gambhir was out for 97, but captain Dhoni's brilliant unbeaten 91 led India to a famous win with 10 balls to spare.

FINANCIAL TIMES - LONDON

A nerveless, match-winning 109-run partnership between Gautam Gambhir and Mahendra Singh Dhoni propelled India past sub-continental rivals Sri Lanka to their second cricket World Cup victory.

India captain Dhoni produced his best innings of the tournament and was named man of the match, hitting a match-winning six and finishing with 91, while Gambhir fell for 97, just short of what would have been a well deserved century.

INDIA has won the World Cup for the first time since 1983 with a hard-fought, six-wicket win over Sri Lanka in Mumbai.

MS Dhoni brought up the win in spectacular fashion by hitting a six with 11 balls remaining as India hauled in Sri Lanka's total of 6/274.

Gautam Gambhir and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni starred for the home team as India won their first World Cup for 28 years. The finale gave Tendulkar, the world's most successful Test and one-day batsman, his first World Cup title in six appearances since 1992. The defeat ended Sri Lankan star bowler Muttiah Muralitharan's dream of being part of a second World Cup-winning team, having won the title under Arjuna Ranatunga in 1996 in Lahore.

Gambhir, dropped on 30 and nearly run out on 49, made 97 to put India within sight of victory after openers Virender Sehwag (0) and Sachin Tendulkar (18) both fell cheaply to fast bowler Lasith Malinga.

The pressure of the epic final began even before a ball was bowled. There were various conspiracy theories about the toss and how the captains often do not see which way the coin turns. Immediately, there was confusion regarding as to who won the toss initially.

Replays of the toss indicated decisively that Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara called heads the first time as well, and the call was audible to the television producers, it was reported. In the noise, Dhoni misheard it as a 'tails' call and he turned towards TV convener Ravi Shastri saying, "we will bat."

However neither Shastri nor match referee Jeff Crowe had heard Sangakkara's call, due to the noise. Then Shastri looked across to Crowe. The referee said, "I didn't hear it." There was then a brief conversation and the toss was made again and Sangakkara called right once again.
